For unlocking a research, you generally have to perform a challenge, maybe as a particular faction, maybe as any faction. For example, S105 (Increases mana regen based on your RP totals) requires that you have a total of 600 RP among all 6 research trees. The low level vanilla stuff is a slight grind. The game really opens up once you get to the merc faction and beyond. Elfs>Demons>fairies>goblins>angels>undead = vanilla factions. Titans>faceless>druids = nuetrals. This is only my opinion - others may have a slight different ranking. #12.
